Elizabethtown Public Library September 2012 Calendar of Events

Baby Time Wednesdays at 9:15am: September 19 and 26. Registration required, begins September 4. Sweet stories, songs & action rhymes – a playtime just for baby and grown-up. (Newborn to 17 months with adult caregiver; any older children must be strictly supervised for the babies’ safety.) Limit: 15 pairs.

Toddler TimeWednesdays at 10:30am: September 19 and 26. Registration required, begins September 4. Singing, dancing & stories! (18 to 36 months with adult caregiver; NO YOUNGER CHILDREN, please) Limit: 20 pairs.

Sing, Sign & Storytime – Thursdays at 10:30am. September 20. Registration starts September 4.

Preschool Storytime – Tuesdays at 11am: September 18 and 25. Registration required, begins September 4. Stories, songs, an art activity, puppets & silly stuff! (Activities for ages 3 – 6; all ages welcome for storytelling) Limit: 24 children/session for art activity.

Teen Knitting Club - Tuesdays at 6pm:  September 11, 18 and 25. Join other teens in learning how to knit. Our current group is working to create an afghan. Bring your own knitting needles (size 8) and a ball of worsted weight (medium/4) yarn and learn how to knit today!

Community Knitting Group – Second and fourth Thursday of each month at 6pm: September 13 and 27. Learn & share your knitting skills while enjoying some time away.

Dog Tales with Murray is you reading to a furry friend – a basset hound named Murray! Registration is required for this program on Saturday, September 8 at 10am. Each child who signs up will receive 10-15 minutes to read individually with Murray, a licensed therapy dog with Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services. The child may bring a book they are currently reading or choose from a selection at the Library.  This program is open to all kids in grades 1-5.

For the Love of Reading: All About Books Days at Elizabethtown Public Library. Learn how reading is exciting & fun with some acting, crafting, and, of course, reading! Saturdays in September & October from 10am – Noon. Saturday, September 8: Ages 3-5; Saturday, September 29: K – 2nd grade; Saturday, October 6: 3rd – 5th grade FREE.

Fall Book Page Wreath: Saturday, September 8 from 1:00PM-3:00PM. Make a lovely wreath for your home from pages of discarded books. It’s beautiful, simple, and very inexpensive – plus it’s recycling! Bring your glue gun or sturdy glue, scissors, and an old book. If you don’t have a book to use, the Library will have a large supply to choose from.

The Amish Film & Discussion with Donald Kraybill: Thursday, September 13 from 6PM-9PM with a short intermission. Join us for a special presentation of the American Experience documentary film, The Amish. Participate in a discussion about the film with Donald Kraybill, academic consultant to the producer and Senior Fellow, Young Center for Anabaptist & Pietist Studies at Elizabethtown College. You must register in advance for this program. Seating is limited.

Smoothie Concert Featuring Jordan Judd: Monday, September 17th at 6:30PM. Relax and enjoy the sounds of Jordan Judd in Concert at Elizabethtown Coffee Company, a department of the Library. Music performed will be patriotic, in the style of Josh Grobin, and some Broadway show numbers. Your entry fee is a smoothie or comparably priced beverage or item in Elizabethtown Coffee Company! All sales in Elizabethtown Coffee Company help support Elizabethtown Public Library.

Make cards for deployed service members with us on Tuesday, September 18 from 6:00PM-7:30PM. This is part of the Operation Write Home program. Find out more on our online calendar.

Success Night for Grades K-3: Thursday, September 20 at 6:30PM. Help us celebrate our new Success collection with activities, free food and cool prizes! You could win an Arts & Crafts Kit with paints, glue and more OR Snrinky-Dink Maker & Supplies OR a Tasty Science Experiment Kit OR an Angry Birds Pillow!

Writer’s Group – Third Thursday of each month at 6pm: September 20. Writers at any level get together to share their work. The group includes people with a similar interest in writing. This provides a motivational and comfortable environment for every group member. The Writing Group originated at Elizabethtown College, but has continued at Elizabethtown Public Library and is open to anyone interested in sharing their writing to gain feedback and skill.

Stitch ’n Time – Meets the third Tuesday of every month at 2:00pm:  September 18. No charge, no registration necessary. Casual crafting for anyone – come and stitch, sew, knit, crochet, stamp – whatever. Buy a drink or snack from Elizabethtown Coffee Co., a department of the Library to make the time even sweeter.

Book Discussion –Third Saturday at 9am: September 22. Get a nice coffee, tea, or other from Elizabethtown Coffee Company (a department of Elizabethtown Public Library) and join friendly faces for a chat about Little Bee by Chris Cleave. Next month’s selection is Rainwater by Sandra Brown.

Science Around Us: A Cloverbuds 4-H Saturdays, September 22 & 29; October 6, 13, & 20 at 1:30pm. Children will enjoy science topics through exploration, books, crafts and other fun activities. Recommended for kids ages 5-9. Registration is limited. Please note: There is a $10 fee for this program that covers all five sessions.

Water Wonders: Monday, September 24th at 6:30PM. Have fun learning about water: where it comes from, where it goes, and how to conserve it during this fascinating program led by instructors from Sierra Club-Lancaster Group. Participants and their parents will learn how being wise with water can save the environment. This free, 1-hour program includes a craft and games. Recommended for children ages 7-10. Limit: 15.

Fused Plastic Bag Demo & Plarnathon: Tuesday, September 25th from 6:00PM-7:45PM. What do you do with all of those plastic bags? Yes, recycle them. Let us show you how to creatively use your plastic bags to make a plastic fabric that can be the basis for some terrific bags. It’s easy and free and the possibilities are great! We’ll also continue learning to plarn (yarn made from plastic bags) and turning plarn into crocheted bags, etc. Bring your plastic bags, scissors, and crochet hook.
