November 18, 2011— Twenty-four local families from the greater-Elizabethtown area will benefit over the Thanksgiving holiday from a fundraiser conducted by eighth graders at Elizabethtown Area Middle School. The collection was part of the school’s Feathers for Families program.

In its sixteenth year, Feathers for Families is an eight-grade service learning project. It entailed students selling paper feathers to construct a giant turkey in the lunchroom. The proceeds from the sale were used to purchase traditional Thanksgiving food items like frozen turkeys, green beans, canned corn, yams, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, applesauce, and bread.

Prior to the Thanksgiving break, about a dozen students gathered after school to pack the items into food baskets for delivery to the families. In total, the feather sale raised $1,740 to be used to purchase the food items. In addition to the after-school packers, eighth graders served in various other capacities as part of the project including feather sellers and hangers, shoppers, and food basket distributors.

Since its inception in 1995, the Feathers for Families program has steadily grown. In year one, the school put together food baskets for eight families while this year twenty-four were provided a basket.
