EASD to honor legendary coach Jane Hoover

August 11, 2011— Legendary Elizabethtown Area High School field hockey coach Jane Hoover will be honored by over 90 of her former players, assistant coaches, and friends during a special evening with the coach on August 25 at 6:30 p.m. The special ceremony will be held in the high school cafeteria and is open to all friends and former players of coach Hoover. Hoover, who was inducted into the Elizabethtown Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007, was a physical education teacher for the Elizabethtown Area School District from 1949-1987. During her tenure, she coached the girls’ field hockey team to an impressive 299 wins or ties out of 351 games played. Under Hoover’s direction, the field hockey team won 16 section titles, 7 county championships, 1 district III championship. In 1974, she led the field hockey team to the first Pennsylvania state championship. She also earned acclaim as the tennis coach where her teams won 196 matches and eleven county championships.
In 1964 and 1975 she received the recognition of Woman of the Year given by the Elizabethtown Business and Professional Women’s Club, and in 1988 was the first woman recipient of the George W. Kirchner Memorial Award given by the Lancaster Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. On Saturday, September 8, 2001, Elizabethtown Area School District, in collaboration with the Big E Booster Club, dedicated a field in Hoover’s honor.
