Steve Pavao and Ian Fitzgerald at Conewago CoffeehouseMar 29th, 2011 | By Martha Pineno | Category: Events, Features
Like A.P. Carter, Steve Pavao is the patriarch of a family band: the Pavao Family Band, in fact. Steve’s songs share with those of the Carter Family the conveyance of simple but timeless messages told with little adornment. Unlike ol’ A.P. however, who did a great deal of song collecting, Steve’s repertoire consists primarily of original compositions. In addition, Steve has a penchant to ‘go solo’ from time to time, as he does on this tour and on his current single “My Beautiful Friend”. This song has been chosen to appear on the forthcoming compilation CD from The Starving Artist in Keene, NH. With the Pavao Family Band, he has recently released the single “Time To Go” b/w “Block Island Song.”
Ian has been performing for the last five years throughout New England. He was selected for and performed as part of the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival’s 2008 Emerging Artists Showcase. His song “Lillian” came in first place at the 2009 Boston Folk Festival Songwriting Contest. In addition, Ian has played a smattering of shows in Atlantic Canada, where audiences are noted connoisseurs of two things: salt cod and singer-songwriters.
In that time, Ian has released three albums independently and a fourth, his latest record, on Dirt Floor Records. Upon hearing one of Ian’s songs (”Concrete Mirror”), Vance Gilbert commented, “He can obviously construct a lyric better than I ever could.” Other less famous people have said some very nice things, too.
