In this section of the Elizabethtown Journal, original works by Elizabethtown Journal readers will be presented. Works of fiction, extended commentaries, non-fiction essays, and scientific or academic papers written for a general audience are all considered “original essays and short papers”. These essays and papers differ from other stories in the Journal in two respects: (a) their content is not considered local news, and (b) they are subject to a more complex review and editorial process. Elizabethtown Area High School Spring Band Concert

The Elizabethtown Area High School Spring Band Concert is scheduled for Saturday, April 10 at 7 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Pieces to be performed include Resplendent Glory; Grand Serenade for an Awful Lot of Winds and Percussion; On A Hymnsong of Phillip Bliss; First Suite in E-Flat; Instant Concert; Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End; and Stars and Stripes Forever. The concert is free and open to the public. The band is under the direction of Steven Barraclough.

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (03/31/2010)(readMedia)– The music of George Frideric Handel’s “Nine German Arias” (“Neun deutsche Arien”), and select works from Igor Stravinsky and Victor Herbert, are highlights of the Monday Series Concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 12, in Elizabethtown College’s Zug Memorial Hall. The Music Division of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts presents this concert featuring soprano Phyllis Drackley, and Scott Drackley on harpsichord and piano, assisted by FAPA faculty members Ellen Eager, cello, and Paula Nelson, baroque flute. ELIZABETHTOWN, PA – Children and parents are invited to the 8th Open Door Recital — an interactive and unique program of short pieces performed by Elizabethtown College music therapy students. The concert, free and open to the public, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, in Zug Recital Hall. During the recital, all expressions of joy are encouraged. A reception follows the concert to give the children an opportunity to meet the performers. Tickets for the concert are free, but are required. Award-winning poet Gerald Stern will visit Elizabethtown College

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA  – Award-winning poet Gerald Stern will visit Elizabethtown College Thursday, April 8. The English Department sponsors a reading at 7 p.m. in the Leffler Chapel and Performance Center, Musser Auditorium. Stern was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1925 and attended Pittsburgh and Columbia universities. He has authored 15 books of poetry including, “This Time: New and Selected Poems,” which won the National Book Award in 1998. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, three National Endowment of the Arts Fellowships, the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts for the State of Pennsylvania, the Lamont Poetry Prize[Read more...]

Elizabethtown College presents “Central Station”

The Friends of the High Library and the Office of International Programs at Elizabethtown College present “Central Station,” an emotional and enduring tale of love and forgiveness, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, in the College’s Brinser Lecture Room, Steinman Center. The film portrays the powerful bond a young boy creates with a lonely retired schoolteacher after witnessing his mother’s accidental death. Elizabethtown Area High School will present OKLAHOMA

Elizabethtown Area High School will present the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical classic, OKLAHOMA! on March 4, 5, and 6, 2010.  Performances will be held each evening at 7 p.m. in the school’s auditorium.  There will also be a matinee performance on Saturday, March 6 at 1:00 pm. The groundbreaking musical features such Broadway hit songs as, “Surrey With the Fringe on Top”, “Oh What a Beautiful Mornin’” and the title song, “OKLAHOMA!” The production features a cast of 45 and a student orchestra and stage crew of more than 75 students.
