Elizabethtown, PA Gretna Music’s 2015-2016 Classy Brass season at Elizabethtown College’s Leffler Chapel and Performance Center, a celebration of classical music’s ‘heavy metal,’ begins with a showstopping virtuoso turn by New York Philharmonic principal trombonist Joseph Alessi Sunday, November 1 at 7:30 pm.

Joseph Alessi was appointed Principal Trombone of the New York Philharmonic in 1985.  While still a high school student, Mr. Alessi was a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony.  He went on to study at the Curtis Institute of Music, and served four seasons as second trombone of The Philadelphia Orchestra, and one season as principal trombone of L’Orchestre symphonique de Montreal before joining the New York Philharmonic. In addition, he has performed as guest principal trombonist with the London Symphony Orchestra in Carnegie Hall led by Pierre Boulez.

Inl 1990 he made his solo debut with the New York Philharmonic, performing Creston’­s Fantasy for Trombone, and in 1992 premiered Christopher Rouse’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Trombone Concerto with the Philharmonic, a work commissioned for ensemble’s 150th anniversary.

He was featured in the 1997 International Trombone Festival in Feldkirch, Austria, and the International Meeting of Brass Instruments in Lille, France. In 2002 Mr. Alessi was awarded an International Trombone Association Award for his contributions to the world of trombone music.  His recording of George Crumb’s Starchild on the Bridge record label won a Grammy Award for 1999-2000. Mr. Alessi is currently on the faculty of The Juilliard School.

For his November 1 program, Passacaglia:  Joseph Alessi and Friends, Mr. Alessi will be joined by guitarist Allen Krantz and pianist Gilya Hodos for a concert of trombone virtouso showstoppers, plus a performance of Mr. Krantz’s Passacaglia, written in memory of Joseph’s teacher, trombone legend Glenn Dodson, who tragically died in Joe’s arms in 2007. Joe was visiting him when Glenn fainted.  By the time the ambulance arrived, Glenn was gone.

Mr. Alessi will be conducting a master class with students of Elizabethtown College in the college’s Zug Recital Hall at 2 pm November 1.  The master class is free and open to the public.

Come early to enjoy a First Listen youth performance by Elizabethtown College students, soprano Sarah Kreider, and guitarist Frank Zarefoss, at 6:45 pm.
