March 30, 2015- The Elizabethtown Area High School boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams are joining forces this season to play for a cause. The week of April 13-17 has been dubbed “Assisting Our Defenders” week. To help raise awareness and support of the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP), the Bears and Lady Bears will take to Jane Hoover Field to compete against league rivals Warwick, Manheim Township and Lampeter-Strasburg High Schools.

The teams decided on the Wounded Warrior Project because of the core values and principals of the organization. Fun, integrity, loyalty, innovation and service are the values that WWP uses every day in dealing with the wounded service men and women of our country. These are the same concepts all successful teams exhibit including the Bears and Lady Bears so it was a natural fit and easy decision.

In addition to the two Elizabethtown teams, nine other teams from the Lancaster-Lebanon League will join in the week-long effort. Each team is selling “Assisting Our Defender” t-shirts to help raise funds for the WWP. Elizabethtown Area High School alone has sold 563 shirts and will be contributing over $3,200. When factoring in the early projected numbers from the other teams that sold shirts, “Assisting Our Defenders” Week is projecting a donation of over $8,000 to the WWP.

Events scheduled for Elizabethtown are as follows:

  • Monday, April 13 –  Bears vs. Warwick, 7 p.m.*
  • Wednesday, April 15 – Lady Bears’ vs. Manheim Township, 5:30 p.m.*
  • Wednesday, April 15 – Rheems MS girls vs. Manheim Township (special event game after girls varsity game)
  • Wednesday, April 15 – Bears @ Manheim Township, 4 p.m.
  • Saturday, April 18 – Bears vs. Lampeter-Strasburg, 1 p.m. (check ceremony)*
  • *Admission will be free to all E-town home games. Donations to the WWP will be accepted at the gate. In addition, a portion of the concession profits will be donated to the WWP.

April 18 is also Elizabethtown Community Lax Day. Prior to the varsity game, youth teams from Rheems will take to the fields for some friendly competition. Games will be held on Jane Hoover Field at 9 a.m., 10 a.m. and 11 a.m., as well as Elizabethtown College’s Wolf Field at 9 a.m.

We hope the community comes out to support WWP and enjoy some great lax, good food and team spirit!
