February 23, 2015- A team of students from Elizabethtown Area High School recently took third place in the first annual regional Governor’s JOBS1st PA STEM Competition. The bronze-medal winning team was comprised of seniors Joanna Redcay, Joey Betz, Corby Rider, Muzzy Islam and Sam McMinn

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and math. The corresponding competition was open to all high school students throughout the Commonwealth. Each participating school could enter a team of five students that was challenged with devising a solution to a real-world problem relevant to each team’s respective community.

Competing teams conducted research, designed, built and presented their device/project to a panel of judges (from local businesses, universities, and public education) that was capable of making the quality of life better for citizens of Pennsylvania. Students were also required to engage with their local community to learn about STEM-related careers and the skills necessary to be successful.

Elizabethtown Area High School’s STEM team developed a shallow water generator to produce electricity. The small turbine could be used in flood-prone areas of Lancaster County, including many low lying communities within the school district boundaries.
