Oct 28th, 2013 | By | Category: Front Page, News

October 28, 2013- Elizabethown Area School District students Kayla Eck and Madalyn Powers were recently recognized as the October Do the Right Thing award winners. The Do The Right Thing program recognizes students from the Elizabethtown Area School District who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude, or outstanding efforts to foster a positive school environment. The program provides a way to recognize good deeds and reinforce exemplary behavior. Hollinger’s Services was the program’s sponsor for October.

Eck, a junior at the high school, received her award for befriending a student who was sitting alone for lunch in the cafeteria on the fourth day of school. She had asked the student to come and sit at her table. When the student turned her down twice, she took her whole table of friends over to the student who was sitting alone and joined him to get a whole table to get to know this student. Eck has been doing other kind things in the school as well maintaining a very polite and cheerful attitude. Eck was accompanied by her family including her mother Susan Snyder, her father Robert Eck, her stepfather Tom Snyder, her sister Kristen Eck, her grandparents Patricia and Robert Eck, and her friend Austin Brinser as she received her award.

Powers, also a junior at the high school, received her award for coordinating and organizing a safe, healthy, and drug free event for all high school students. Powers has been actively involved in EACTC’s coalition that is working to reduce the abuse of drugs and alcohol. EACTC also provides positive opportunities and programs for youth and their parents and is working toward making Elizabethtown a safe and healthy community. Powers along with other young people, work hard at developing a strong youth voice, a very important component to the EACTC coalition. Powers was accompanied by her parents Bob and Yvonne Powers as well as her grandparents Bob and Bernie Glocker as she received her award.

In its second year, the Do The Right Thing is a collaborative effort between Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care, Elizabethtown Area School District, Elizabethtown Borough Police Department, Northwest Regional Police Department, and Susquehanna Regional Police Department.  The local program is the second chapter in Pennsylvania and is modeled after a successful national program. School staff members and police officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a child (see the school district website at for the nomination form).

Eck and Powers were honored at the October 15 school board meeting where they received a certificate of recognition, Do the Right Thing t-shirt, and a Visa gift card. In addition to the school directors, superintendent of schools Dr. Michele Balliet, executive director for Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care Gail Viscome, Kathy Haldeman of Hollinger’s Services, and officer Rick Farnsler from the Elizabethtown Police Department were on hand for the ceremony.
