Nov 15th, 2010 | By | Category: Features, Lead 2

November 15, 2010— Twenty-five local veterans were saluted by the Elizabethtown Area School District as part of its annual Veterans Day recognition ceremony. The honorees were parents of secondary students, as well as representatives of the Veterans of Foreign War Post 5667, American Legion Post 329, and residents of the Masonic Village of Elizabethtown.

School Board President Jamie Rowley welcomed the honorees. He reminded the more than 75 students and family members in attendance that the freedoms we are afforded as Americans are a result of the sacrifices of veterans. Superintendent Dr. Amy Hodges Slamp encouraged the students in attendance to always thank a veteran as “freedom doesn’t come free” and the veterans here today are their parents, grandparents, friends, neighbors and are a part of living history, some of which the students are learning in class. Elizabethtown Borough Mayor Chuck Mummert read a proclamation honoring the veterans.

Current high school seniors Adam Heisey, Ashley Auch, Patrick McCarty, and Abby Myers also took part in the program. Heisey delivered the invocation, Auch sang the national anthem, McCarty read a brief history of Veterans Day and Myers read a tribute poem to the Veterans.

In addition to honoring the veterans for their service and sacrifice to the country, the Veterans Day commemoration was tied into the district’s social studies curriculum. It promoted civic involvement and the appreciation of the liberties Americans have and demonstrated the many community members who have contributed to our communities through their service to our country.

Parents of secondary students honored included Anthony Faiola, Thomas Flowers, James Hanley, Mark Klepping, Brad Kramer, Robert Mann, Russell Schweers, Lewis Sellers, Tony Sklareski, Michael Tyler, and Christopher Weaver. Representatives of the American Legion Post 329 honored included Dave Aumiller, Barry Cover, James Phillips, Paul Rettew, Earl Shearer, Ken Stahl, Ken Walsh, and Eugene Wolgemuth. Residents of the Masonic Village At Elizabethtown honored included Russell W. Baker, Chester W. Brown, Richard H. Cherry, and Ned A. Masenheimer. Representatives of the Veterans Of Foreign War Post 5667 honored included Gordon Berrier and Mike Leib.
