College Board announces AP Scholar awards

AP_ScholarsNovember 5, 2010— Fifteen current or past students at Elizabethtown Area High School recently earned AP Scholar Awards. The awards recognize outstanding performance on the 2010 AP exams, which the award-recipients took in May 2010 after completing challenging college-level courses.

Current students earning awards were Meredith Bush, Richard Cunningham, and Alaina Herkelman. 2010 graduates earning awards were Tyler Brown, Charelle Bryant, Rachel Dern, Alicia Grundhoffer, Kelsey Hayden, Carey Heisey, Yoonjung Jung, Corey Landis, Melinda Martrano, Zachary Myers, Katya Rebman, and James Yarnell.

The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides willing and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. About 18 percent of the 1.8 million students worldwide who took AP Exams performed at a sufficiently high level to also earn an AP Scholar Award.

The College Board recognized several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams. AP Scholar with Distinction status is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of the exams. AP Scholar with Honor status is granted to students who receive an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams. AP Scholar status is granted to students who receive grades of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

Heisey earned Scholar with Distinction status, while Dern, Herkelman, and Jung earned Scholar with Honor status. The remaining eleven each earned AP Scholar Awards.
