NMSC_Semifinalists and CommendedOctober 18, 2010—Three Elizabethtown Area High School seniors were recently recognized in the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) academic recognition program. The students are Conrad Brendel, Richard Cunningham, and Angela Vertucci.

Cunningham was named a semifinalist. This prestigious designation placed Cunningham in the top one percent of all U.S. high school seniors or around 16,000 students nationwide. Brendel and Vertucci were named Commended Students. About 34,000 students from around the country were recognized with this distinction. They placed in the top five percent of the more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2011 competition by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

As a semifinalist, Cunningham is among the highest scoring entrants in the Commonwealth. He will now try to attain finalist status and vie for some 8,400 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $36 million, that will be offered in the spring. To become a finalist, a semifinalist must be recommended by their principal, have an academic record of high performance, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Approximately 15,000 semifinalists are expected to advance to the Finalist level. Merit scholars are chosen from this group based on their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Three types of National Merit Scholarships are offered. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. Approximately 250 corporations and business organizations sponsor about 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who meet certain criteria. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,900 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.

Brendel is the son of Sandro and Kelsey Bassanini of Elizabethtown. Cunningham is the son of Thomas and Julie Cunningham of Elizabethtown. Vertucci is the daughter of Michael and Beth Vertucci of Elizabethtown.
