Higher Education

070110beckulogoLook what happens when College is out for the summer. Before you know it, a new rival for 100-year old institutions like Elizabethtown College comes out of the woodwork!

A few summers ago, it was Trump University, founded by the great real estate developer himself, who believed that the traditional four-year colleges were doing such a terrible job at educating the youth of America that he, Donald Trump, needed to step in to save the system.

So how is Trump University, the savior of higher education, doing? Well, recently, they renamed themselves Trump Initiative, which sounds slightly less like a purveyor of higher learning and more like, well, an idea you might have had while talking to Mike or Todd at the local coffee shop. Well, actually it is worse than that, because at least you don’t have to pay Mike or Todd for engaging in a conversation with them. (Unless they have started Mike U. or Todd U., in which case all bets are off.)

And now, in the summer of 2010, just when colleges thought they could breathe freely, along comes Glenn Beck University! No doubt this new threat will keep college presidents awake at nights (although it might be a bit far-fetched to attribute any upcoming retirement to Glenn Beck’s arrival on the scene), but such is the life of a college CEO.

First Trump U., now Beck U. What is it about summers that cause people to start universities named after themselves? Couldn’t be the heat, could it? Naah…
