Vietnam — changes, elderly, orphans — subject of March 8 lecture

Dr. Peggy McFarland, Elizabethtown College professor of social work, spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar in Vietnam, evaluating, researching and teaching about concerns related to the country’s aging population. She advocated for the utilization of medical social workers in hospitals and caregiver support for individuals with dementia. As her time in Vietnam coincided with the 40th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War, McFarland was deeply aware of changes in relationships with the United States that have occurred over the years. Elizabethtown Area Middle School to host regional Formula One in Schools Competition

When: Saturday, March 12, 2016 from 10:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Elizabethtown Area Middle School. 600 East High Street, Elizabethtown, PA 17022. What: Elizabethtown Area School District is hosting the F1 in Schools Regional Finals for Pennsylvania. This popular Formula One challenge will see eleven teams competing for a place at the national finals to be held at Michigan International Speedway in May. Competition day is organized into several parts including racing student designed and manufactured 1/20th scale model Formula One racing cars to see who has the fastest car. E-town Schools Benefit from TCC’s Teachers Rock Campaign

February 26, 2016- The locally owned The Cellular Connection (TCC), a local retailer of Verizon Wireless, recently completed its Teachers Rock campaign to benefit students in the Elizabethtown Area School District. As part of the initiative, Elizabethtown’s TCC donated ten boxes of school supplies to the district. Amy Balsbaugh, principal of East High Street Elementary School, accepted the supplies on behalf of the district. A wide variety of items were donated including glue, pens, pencils, notebook paper, and more. Rheems Elementary raises $1,300 for local charities

February 24, 2016- Rheems Elementary recently conducted a Super Bowl Coin Collection to benefit local charities. As part of the community service project, students brought in their spare change. In total, the school collected $1,300. The funds were split between the Cornerstone Youth Center, Elizabethtown Winter Homeless Shelter, the EASD Bear Bags Program, and Rheems Community Service Fund. To make the initiative not only benefit the community but also fun for the students, each classroom was assigned one of the Super Bowl teams (Denver Broncos or Carolina Panthers). Northwest EMS to offer educational programs

Ambulances responding to emergencies are a highly visible reminder of how Northwest EMS serves this community. NWEMS also provides educational programs to help keep families safe. Cribs for Kids Cribs for Kids is a program that teaches safe sleep practices to parents of infants. Soon-to-be parents in their last few months of pregnancy are welcome to contact NWEMS for information. The greatest risk of Sudden Infant Death is during the first year, and is highest in the second to fourth months of life. East High Street Elementary Raises More Than $12,802.70 for Heart Research

February 23, 2016- East High Street Elementary School raised an amazing $12,802.70 in support of the American Heart Association (AHA) through its Jump Rope For Heart campaign. Top fundraisers were Abby Keener, Claire Mincemoyer, and Mason Schaffner. The trio raised nearly $1,500 between them. Jump Rope for Heart is a school fitness and education program. The event takes place in schools across the country and teaches the value of cardiovascular fitness while raising money for research into heart disease and stroke. EAHS students sing at District Choral Concert

February 23, 2016- Two choral students from Elizabethtown Area High School were selected to the highly competitive Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 chorus. A team of judges comprised of local music teachers chose the talented vocal students from area high schools to be a part of the ensemble. Selected to the honors choir from EAHS were Nicole Faiola (alto) and Dean McBride (bass). Hip Hop/Jazz  Fun, upbeat and energetic form of dance. This style incorporates isolations, rhythm, and musicality to popular music. Jazz is an energetic style of dance that focuses on the technique of leaps, turns, and jumps. Classes will have a warm up including stretching, isolations, and strengthening exercises, and then continue across the floor practicing technique skill and movement. Wear sneakers to class.
