Groundbreaking ceremony for Lancaster Habitat’s Elizabethtown Home Build

Sep 17th, 2015 | By | Category: Features, Lead Article

This is the first in a series of reports chronicling the progress of the Lancaster Habitat’s Elizabethtown Home Build. At the unmistakable sound of shovels hitting dirt, guests attending Lancaster Area Habitat for Humanity’s Groundbreaking Ceremony at 50 East Washington Street on Tuesday, September 15 applauded the official launch of the organization’s Elizabethtown Home Build. The four shiny gold shovels that upturned earth on the empty lot were a ceremonial nod to the start of construction of an energy-efficient, single-family home for a family in need. New and longtime neighbors, Borough officials, community leaders and volunteers gathered at the build[Read more...]

Sep 15th, 2015 | By | Category: Features, Front Page

Click on the link below to view an essay on the origins of our political attitudes.  It was written as an antidote to the somewhat parochial manner in which pundits explain the political affinities of the electorate to us.  It also describes one of the critical features of our life-worlds that guides the development of all of our attitudes, not just the political ones. A personal view of President Spiegler

Sep 11th, 2015 | By | Category: Front Page, News

From E-town NOW Gerhard Ernst Spiegler, the first non-Brethren president of Elizabethtown College, died Monday, Aug. 24, after a brief illness. He served the College from 1985 to 1996, overseeing transformation of the campus and curriculum. This is a remembrance. Like many others, I suspect, my relationship with President Spiegler was complicated. In his first year in office, 1985-86, he decided to change my employment status from a terminal contract to tenure-track. If not for him, I would not have received tenure and promotion to associate professor of political science at Elizabethtown.  In his final year as president, 1995-96, I[Read more...]

Activist side of Mister Rogers discussed Sept. 16

Sep 3rd, 2015 | By | Category: Front Page, News

Long, director of the College’s Peace and Conflict Studies, revisits the legacy of Fred Rogers — Presbyterian minister, songwriter, author, educator, television host and creator of Mister Rogers Neighborhood – in “Mr. Rogers, Button-Down Sweaters and Social Change,” at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the Musser Auditorium of the College’s Leffler Chapel and Performance Center. Long is author of the recently[Read more...]
