EASD News: E-town Student Named National Merit Semifinalist and Athletic Hall of Fame Induction

October 18, 2013- Elizabethtown Area High School senior Rachel Tesmer is among 16,000 Semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Competition. This prestigious designation placed her in the top one percent of all U.S. high school seniors and among the highest scoring entrants in Pennsylvania. Tesmer is the daughter of John and Alice Tesmer of Elizabethtown. About 1.5 million current seniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT in their junior year, which served as the initial screening of program entrants. Ridership at Elizabethtown Train Station jumps nearly 10 percent

From Chronicling Elizabethtown (Oct 15) Thanks to a post on the Elizabethtown Advocate’s Facebook page yesterday, I learned that ridership at the Elizabethtown Train Station has jumped nearly 10 percent for the fiscal year ending on Sept. 30, 2013. Here’s what Dan Robrish, the Advocate’s editor and publisher, posted: Holy Toledo! Amtrak released ridership figures today — for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2013, there were 123,153 passengers boarding and leaving trains at Elizabethtown. Fire in the Glen to Hold Concert and Host Trip to Letterkenny

Fire in the Glen, a Lancaster County-based Irish band that has been entertaining Elizabethtown crowds for nearly 15 years, is leading a trip to Ireland next summer.  The band hopes to bring the E-town experience along for the ride. Fire in the Glen has been performing in Elizabethtown since 1999.  They have performed at Lunch in the Square and Arts in the Park. The band now features local musicians Tom Knapp, Michael Filippo and Amanda Wells.  The band has organized a tour from July 25 to Aug. 2 of next year. October 17, 2013- Elizabethtown Area High School seniors Abigail Stump and Noah Mitchell were named the Elizabethtown Rotary Club’s Students of Month for October. Abby and Noah were honored for their high academic achievement and extensive involvement in school and community service activities. Abby is the daughter of James and Ronda Stump of Elizabethtown. Abby is a member of the prestigious National Honor Society. She holds several leadership positions at the high school including being captain of the cheerleading team, class historian, and student council secretary. Monday, October 28  7:30 p.m.  Leffler Chapel and Performance Center Monday Series Concert – Trio Caprice The Monday Series Concerts give students and community members the opportunity to hear professional performances. Trio Caprice consists of cellist Sara Male, violinist Stephanie McCullough, and pianist Debra Ronning.  All three are faculty members of the Fine and Performing Arts Department at Elizabethtown College. “Writer’s Nite Out” on first Friday of every month

Each first Friday of the month an “open mike” will be held at the Shoppes on Market, 206 S. Market Street in Elizabethtown.  Participants are encouraged to present their poems, essays, plays, songs, and other creative presentations.  Performance artists are welcome to present. Participants are asked to prepare between five and fifteen minutes of material. The open mike begins at 6:00 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public.  More information can be obtained by calling 717 405-2516.

A significant proportion of the population often goes hungry.  A significant proportion of the population does not have access to adequate health care.
