Savoy Shoe Company, Gone but not Forgotten

This story originally appeared June 1, 2006 in the Chronicle.  It is part of the historical portrait series of Elizabethtown  being offered by the Elizabethtown Journal. Shoes were to Elizabethtown what steel was to Pittsburgh.  In 1763, a cobbler, Frederick Zetty, purchased one of the first lots sold by Barnabas Hughes (just south of the square) and shoemaking came to the new town of Elizabeth.  From that early date, one or more shoemakers practiced their trade in Elizabethtown up until 1979 when the last shoe factory in town, the Beford Shoe Company, closed its doors. Borough Update on Train Station 7/31/13

 Elizabethtown Train Station Project Update #32 The new train station overflow and long term parking lot at the end of Wilson Avenue opens for train riders on Thursday, August 1st.  Construction of the parking lot and other improvements to the train station property (including installation of a bike rack canopy, sidewalks, retaining wall and landscaping along the platform banks, security cameras, motorcycle parking, signage, and the paving of Wilson Avenue) are complete.  With the completion of this project, the temporary overflow parking lot on Masonic Drive will be removed and train riders should transition to the Wilson Avenue parking areas. [Read more...]

Adventure Camp Offered           An exciting week of awesome activities! Each day this camp will have a different theme, as well as other activities to do. Themes will include Water Day, Tie Dye Day, Scavenger Hunt Day, Carnival Day (bounce house) and much more! Lunch will be provided each day at noon. Ages 6-14. Area seniors are invited to participate in any of the following programs held at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center.  The Senior Center is located in the GEARS Community Center, Elizabethtown and is open Monday through Friday.  Call the center for more information about the activities or to make reservations at 367-7984. The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center is a service of GEARS and The Lancaster County Office of Aging. From Chronicling Elizanethtown If you’ve driven to the south side of the Elizabethtown area — Giant, Kmart, Weis — you’ve probably seen the construction at the former Hiestand Flooring. This is at the corner of Carey Lane and South Market Street, across from McDonald’s and Union Community Bank. Members First Credit Union is building a new branch there, which will be a big improvement over how that corner has looked in recent years.  Moo-Duk-Kwan Karate  GEARS invites you to join its Moo-Duk-Kwan Karate program. Gain self defense, self discipline and self respect with physical fitness benefits with year-round instruction for children and adults.  The instructor, Roger Engle, is a 7th degree black belt and has taught with GEARS since 1978.  This is a Korean Martial Art with a white through black belt system for ages 5 through adults.  Girls Basketball Camp           Attention future Lady BEARS Basketball Players!  Camp is under the direction of Janelle Garber, Elizabethtown Varsity Girls Basketball Coach. This camp will focus on the fundamentals of the game.  Coaches will stress the basics of dribbling, shooting, passing, etc.  Come ready to learn and improve.  Wear sneakers and comfortable clothes.  Camp t-shirt included in fee.  For girls entering grades 3-8.  Camp is Monday-Friday, August 5-9 from 9 am-12 noon in the Elizabethtown Area High School Daubert Gymnasium (600 East High Street, Elizabethtown). Remembering Tony’s

    Another in the series of articles about Elizabethtown’s history by Pat and Lloyd Reed.  The essays originally apperaed in the Chronicle.   Bev Ulrich and her husband, Skip, purchased the building on South Market Street that had once housed Tony’s Restaurant.  The restaurant had been a hang out for teenagers in the 1950s because it featured a jukebox, pinball machines and soda fountain with a counter.  Root beer floats and Pat Boone, how cool was that!     As a surprise gift to Skip, Bev had Wayne Fettro paint a mural on the front of the building.  The lower section[Read more...]
