Concerto competition winners featured performers at April 21 College-Community Orchestra concert

Elizabethtown College-Community Orchestra performs its annual spring concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21. This free event, sponsored by the Department of Fine and Performing Arts, Music Division, is in Leffler Chapel and Performance Center. The spring concert features winners of the 2012 Elizabethtown College Concerto Competition- soprano Anna Matlack, violinist Rachel Lane and pianist Shannon O’Leary. The performance will conclude with Modest Mussorgsky’s composition “Pictures at an Exhibition.” The College-Community Orchestra, an 80-member ensemble, performs under the direction of Dr. Robert Spence. Cardiac Kids From Rheems Raise More Than $7,800 for Heart Research

March 27, 2013- Rheems Elementary School held its annual Jump Rope For Heart campaign to benefit the American Heart Association (AHA). With music pumping and kids jumping, the school raised $7,824.87 for the fight against heart disease and strokes. The school’s biennial fundraiser was held during the students’ gym class over a two-day period. Teamed in groups of 3, students spent a minute jumping rope or doing some other form of heart-healthy exercise and two minutes resting and stretching for their next turn. E-Town Three-peats In Prestigious We The People Competition

March 22, 2013- Elizabethtown Area High School captured first place in the “We the People” state finals. This marks the third consecutive year and fourth time in five years that the team from E-town took home gold medals. As state champions, Elizabethtown Area High School is now eligible to represent Pennsylvania in the national competition to be held in Washington DC in late April. The culminating event at the national finals will involve the top schools competing on Capitol Hill in the Congressional committee rooms. Donegal Indians Nipped in State AAA Semifinals

Imhotep Charter nipped the Indians 56-54 in a PIAA Class AAA state semifinal game in Reading on Tuesday.  The Indians end their season with a 29-3 record.  Donegal defeated the defending AAA champs to advance to the semifinals.  Their reward was to face the back-to-back AA champs who had moved to triple AAA this year. Students Earn Gold Keys in Scholastic Writing Awards

March 20, 2013- Elizabethtown Area High School juniors Emily Hess and Matt Stephens earned awards for their writings in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. This prestigious recognition program provides an avenue for students to express themselves through writing. Hess and Stephens both won awards at the regional judging level while Hess became the first Elizabethtown Area High School student in many years to score top awards in the national competition. March 20, 2013- Elizabethtown Area High School seniors Erin Sollenberger and John Shank were named the Elizabethtown Rotary Club’s students of month for March. Sollenberger and Shank were honored by the service club for their high academic achievement and extensive involvement in school and community service activities. Sollenberger is the daughter of Kurt and Tricia Sollenberger of Elizabethtown. She is a National Merit Scholarship commended student and treasurer of the prestigious National Honor Society. EAHS Students Perform at Prestigious PMEA Music Festivals

March 20, 2013—Elizabethtown Area High School was well represented at the 2013 Pennsylvania Music Educator Association (PMEA) band, chorus, and orchestra festivals. PMEA is a statewide nonprofit organization of over 5,000 members dedicated to promoting the musical development of all Pennsylvanians. Participation at the district, regional, and state levels is highly competitive involving talented student musicians from schools all across the region and state. 36 EAHS students inducted into National Honor Society

March 20, 2013— Elizabethtown Area High School recently inducted 36 students into its T.H. Ebersole Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS). Membership in the National Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school student. A ceremony was held on Mar. 13 to recognize the students’ selection into the prestigious organization in front of family and friends.
