Friends of Elizabethtown Public Library Present Check

The Friends of Elizabethtown Public Library presented their annual contribution to Elizabethtown Public Library at their most recent meeting on June 18, 2012. This check represents the year-long efforts of all of the Friends of the Library through Etown Books, the used bookstore located in the Library as well as the virtual store on e-Bay and Half.com; as well as the Annual Booksale held each fall at Elizabethtown Public Library.  The Friends of Elizabethtown Public Library are a volunteer group whose purpose is to support the Library by organizing and selling donated items. Area seniors are invited to participate in any of the following programs held at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center. The Senior Center is located in the GEARS Community Center, Elizabethtown and is open Monday through Friday. Call the center for more information about the activities or to make reservations at 367-7984. The Elizabethtown Senior Center is a service of GEARS and the Lancaster County Office of Aging. Elizabethtown College students work in PA State Legislature

ELIZABETHTOWN, PA — The 2012 recipients of the James A. Finnegan Fellowship were recently honored during a banquet at the Governor’s Residence. Four recipients-including Suzanne Laucks and Tyler Eshelman from Elizabethtown College-were selected from a pool of 17 applicants, representing 11 colleges and universities. The winners are participating in paid summer internships in the Harrisburg legislative system, and receive a stipend of at least $1,000. The Fellowship is awarded each year by the James A. Finnegan Foundation, which was founded in 1960 by friends of Finnegan after his untimely death while serving as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of the Commonwealth. Finnegan strongly[Read more...]



Elizabethtown Area Students Win Big At Math 24 Challenge Competition

June 27, 2012— Elizabethtown Area School District students recently exceled at the regional Math 24 Challenge held in Lancaster. In a highly competitive environment that featured over 130 outstanding young mathematicians from area schools, Adam Evans earned the title of champion in the fourth and fifth grade classification. In total, eight students from Elizabethtown took part in the competition and a remarkable five placed in the top 16. Joining Evans on the medal stand was Caleb Gerber who placed fourth. E-town Boys Club hosts baseball tournaments this summer

From Chronicling Elizabethtown For the first time, the Elizabethtown Boys Club is hosting baseball tournaments this summer for youth baseball under the title “Battle for the Bears Cup.” EBC is jumping in with both feet and holding four tournaments for various age groups: 8U, 9U, 10U and 11U. The first tournament, featuring 10U players, starts this weekend. Scott Schneider, one of the directors for the 9U tournament, said teams from throughout south central Pennsylvania — Juniata County, Chambersburg, Hershey, Palmyra — and as far as Reading, Exton and Maryland will be traveling to Elizabethtown over four weekends. J’s Sweet Treats and J’s Sweet Treats Ice Cream Parlor is located on the Southeast corner of the Elizabethtown Square.  It is one of several new food-related businesses in Elizabethtown.  The owner is Jody Viers Stapler.  Jodi grew up in Elizabethtown.   She has been an entertainer since her childhood.  During her childhood years, she performed at the Fulton Opera House, the Ephrata Performing Arts Center, the Elizabethtown Music Foundation, and the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. Elizabethtown Area School District hires new director of athletics

 June 20, 2012— The Elizabethtown Area School District is pleased to announce the hiring of Lauren Cavallaro as the district’s new athletic director. Ms. Cavallaro comes to Elizabethtown from Miami University of Ohio where has served in a number of capacities including director of academic support services for athletics and football administration, director of football operations, and NCAA compliance coordinator.  Learn To Swim Classes  GEARS offers Learn To Swim classes for ages 4 and older.  This program provides opportunities for achievement and allows smooth transition between levels of instruction.  Activities offered at every level stimulate interest and motivate participants to advance to the next level of instruction.  Session III classes will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, July 9-20. Level I is from 7:15-7:45 pm, Level II from from 7:45-8:15 pm and Level III/IV from 8:15-9 pm. Session IV classes are on Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays, August 6-17.
