ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (02/29/2012)– Results from a new regional report, The Family Business Confidence Survey, reveal optimism among family business owners for 2012, according to researchers at the Department of Business and the S. Dale High Center for Family Business at Elizabethtown College. The survey is the first ever to examine family businesses in PA. Iddy Biddy Soccer GEARS will offer an Iddy Biddy Soccer Program for ages 3-5. Coaches will teach basic soccer skills such as dribbling, passing and trapping. Participants will become familiar with the game of soccer. Emphasis will also be placed on social skills. Fee includes a t-shirt. This instructional program will be held on Saturdays, April 14-June 2 (no 5/26) from 9-10 am (Class A) 10-11 am (Class B) and 11 am-12 noon at the High School Soccer Field #2. As my husband and I were returning to Elizabethtown from Hershey along Rt 743 around 5pm last evening, we watched in amazement as a huge flock of snow geese flew in waves over the highway. I wait for this show every year, as late winter brings enormous flocks of these bird to our area as they head back to their Arctic breeding grounds. Snow geese live in the Arctic during the summer months, and begin their fall migration to winter feeding grounds between August and October. Courtesy of Chronicling Elizabethtown The state Department of Environmental Protection granted a permit for the borough to repair the Chestnut Street bridge, damaged in the flooding last September and closed to traffic ever since. You might remember a post late last year complaining about the delay. Borough staff reported last Thursday night, at Borough Council’s monthly business meeting, that DEP had just granted the permit that day. Construction should begin soon. Borough Council initially had approved repairs totaling nearly $71,000 to the bridge. February 23, 2012 The Elizabethtown Area boys basketball team defeated South Western High School 67-52 yesterday evening. They advance to the third round of the boys District 3 AAAA basketball playoffs at the Giant Center in Hershey. There they will meet Central Dauphin East at 10:00 a.m.on Saturday February 25. If victorious in that game, they will face the winner of the Dover-Chambersburg game. The girls basketball team lost a close 1st round game to Shippensburg 50-48 last week. ELIZABETHTOWN, PA (02/23/2012)– Local author Chet Williamson, along with German-Irish author Hugo Hamilton and poets Yvette Neisser Moreno and Maria Teresa Ogliastri, visit Bowers Writers House at Elizabethtown College during March for public readings and workshop. All events take place at Bowers Writers House, just off campus at 840 College Hill Lane. Chet Williamson, a Lancaster County author, gives a public reading at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 14. Murray the Basset Hound is a familiar sight to many Elizabethtown residents.  He’ll be 10 years old this June, and is slowing down a little on his daily walks, but he hasn’t slowed down in the services he provides to the Elizabethtown Community. Murray has been a therapy dog with Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services for eight of his 10 years. Although many opportunities for therapy work exist outside of Elizabethtown, Mary Gottfried, Murray’s owner, decided that ‘giving back’ to their neighbors made the most sense when choosing volunteer activities with Murray.
