Monday, November 21, 2011 (Reposted from Chronicling Elizabethtown) In my official capacity as the parent of a student at the new Bear Creek School, I attended the dedication ceremony for the $18 million building held yesterday. Originally scheduled for Oct. 30, it was delayed because of that day’s freak snowstorm. The dedication was a nice event, with all the typical dignitaries speaking and thanking the appropriate individuals. Two details stood out to me during the ceremony: (1) In 2009, the Pennsylvania Department of Education said the Bear Creek School construction project was the cheapest of all school construction in the[Read more...]

The collection was part of the school’s Feathers for Families program. In its sixteenth year, Feathers for Families is an eight-grade service learning project. It entailed students selling paper feathers to construct a giant turkey in the lunchroom. The proceeds from the sale were used to purchase traditional Thanksgiving food items like frozen turkeys, green beans, canned corn, yams, stuffing, gravy, potatoes, applesauce, and bread. Prior to the Thanksgiving break, about a[Read more...]

A Coffee Shop in Darkness (Commentary)

Late in the evening in the fall, you drive up from Elizabethtown College on College Ave and stop on Market St. The work on the College Ave extension is going on, and from all appearances, only the bridge over the creek remains to be completed. A bridge too far, you sigh, as you make the right and drive towards Bainbridge. But then it hits you–there is a building on the left in total darkness. Till a few weeks ago, the building was always lit, people milling around inside. On some evenings there was live music; at other times, people came[Read more...]
