Inaugration of New College President

(Posted on College web site) Time: 7 p.m. October 4 Location: Bowers Writers House On October 2, 2006, gunman Charles Carl Roberts IV entered The West Nickel Mines School and rocked the Pennsylvania Amish community to its core. Don Kraybill, international expert on the Amish, will discuss his book Amish Grace: How Forgiveness Transcended Tragedy. Kraybill will examine the specific challenges this book presented him as an author, and will offer his own personal insights into writing and publishing texts about the Amish. E-town High Students Prepare for Spring Musical

September 29, 2011— Over 40 students from Elizabethtown Area High School are taking part in a series of eight dance class workshops being run by professional dancer and choreographer Danny Aldous. Aldous, owner of e-Dance in Elizabethtown, worked with the students on the various skills associated with stage movement with a special emphasis on tap dance. Through his tutelage, Aldous is providing some early instruction on tap dance that the students will be able to apply to this year’s spring musical, 42nd Street. Two E-town Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

September 29, 2011— Two Elizabethtown Area High School seniors are among 16,000 semifinalists in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Competition. Spencer Kenley and Ian Kowalak were named semifinalists. This prestigious designation placed them in the top 1% of all U.S. high school seniors and among the highest scoring entrants in the Commonwealth. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test served as the initial screening for program entrants. About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 competition by taking the test. Kenley and Kowalak will now try to attain finalist status. From Chronicling Elizabethtown (posted Sept 10) As I look out my window this morning, I actually see some sun and a little blue sky! It’s notable after the past few days that saw the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee dump 15 inches of rain on Elizabethtown and the surrounding area. That caused lots of problems, including flooded streets, some people’s evacuating homes on Poplar Street, manholes that bubbled up with excess water and basements with a little to a lot of water. E-town Schools Benefit from Fashion Bug’s Fill The Bus Campaign

September 15, 2011— The local Fashion Bug in Elizabethtown recently completed a back-to-school supply drive to benefit students in the Elizabethtown Area School District. Store patrons donated the items as part of the store’s Fill the Bus campaign in August. Michele Balliet, interim superintendent, and Greg Kiehl, director of support services, accepted the supplies on behalf of the district. A wide variety of items were donated including notebooks, glue sticks, rulers, pens, pencils, calculators, crayons, and notebook paper. EASD To Hold Instrumental Music Parent Night

September 13, 2011— The Elizabethtown Area School District’s Music Department is holding their annual Elementary Instrumental Music Parent Night on Tuesday, September 19 at 6:30 p.m. It will be held in the Bear Creek School Cafeteria. Music students will be performing with their instruments, tips will be given on how to successfully parent a beginning music student, and practice hints and suggestions will be presented. Athletic Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony Set For September 30

September 9, 2011— Elizabethtown Area School District will hold its 2011 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Friday, Sept 30. The festivities will begin with a deli luncheon at Freemason’s Cultural Center, Brossman Ballroom at Masonic Village at 12 p.m. A formal induction will follow lunch. The cost of the lunch is $15, which includes a ticket to the homecoming football game to be played that evening.
