Borough Council approves draft 2011 budget

Last week, Elizabethtown Borough Council approved a preliminary version of the borough’s 2011 budget that contains a deficit of nearly $340,000. This draft is now open for public review at the borough office at 600 S. Hanover St. In a separate vote, council set the maximum millage rate for 2011 at 5.4 mills, which is a 1.2 mills increase. State law requires that council set the millage rate now — but it is not locked in place. Council can lower that rate, but it can’t set the rate higher than 5.4 after the vote last week. Elizabethtown Area Middle School Collects Food For Less Fortunate

December 2, 2010— About twenty eighth-grade volunteers from Elizabethtown Area Middle School recently spent their afternoon packing up food items for twenty-six local families in need of Thanksgiving food baskets. The contents of the baskets were purchased using funds collected as part of the school’s Feathers for Families program. In its fifteenth year, Feathers for Families is the eighth grade service-learning project. In the week’s leading up to Thanksgiving, students and staff at any grade level purchased paper feathers that were hung on the walls of the school. East High Street Elementary Gives To Local Food Bank

December 2, 2010— East High Street Elementary School recently held a food drive to benefit the Elizabethtown Area Food Bank. During the one week in which the drive was held, the school collected over 1,800 food items. Students, faculty, and staff brought in soups, canned vegetables, canned fruit, cereal, rice, and pasta. As part of the drive, prizes were awarded to the top two classes that brought in the most items. The winning rooms were Chrissy Pastor’s third grade class and Christine Anderton’s first grade class. Bainbridge Flies New Flag

December 2, 2010— Bainbridge Elementary School held a flag ceremony on November 9 to commemorate Veterans Day. As part of the special assembly, the old indoor flag from the school lobby was retired and replaced with a new American flag. The flag was given to the school by State Representative David Hickernell. Bainbridge principal Lois Brewer said fifth grader Jacob Bucks was the inspiration for the ceremony. “Jacob and his family stopped by Rep.
