October 27, 2010— Elizabethtown Area Middle School recently held its annual Pathways Career Fair for eighth grade students. The fair was designed to assist the students with selecting one of the four career pathways offered at the high school. Roughly 300 eighth graders had the opportunity to circulate around the cafeteria to speak with over 35 local business leaders and ask them about their profession. As Borough Council begins the budgeting season for 2011, we are facing an extreme situation the likes that many of us have never seen. In fact, my fellow Councilman Meade Bierly said earlier this month that he had never seen in his 40 years on Borough Council a budget as tough as last the one we approved for 2010.

It looks as though this year we might face an even tougher year.

Revenue predictions for next year from the Lancaster County Tax Collection Bureau are way down — and this year the bureau advised municipalities countywide not to expect much from the collection of the earned income tax.

Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care, a community-based, private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of Elizabethtown’s youth and families, invites all Elizabethtown area residents to a Community Conversation to promote healthy behaviors among Elizabethtown youth, especially with regard to drug and alcohol use. On Sept. 28, 2009, Nuts About Granola was the “Snack of the Day” on the nationally-televised program. Recently, the company had another big break. October 7, 2010— Elizabethtown Area High School will present the courtroom drama, Twelve Angry Jurors, on Thursday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 23 at 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The show is based on the Henry Fonda movie classic, Twelve Angry Men. October 7, 2010— The Elizabethtown Area School District received three awards in the 41st Annual Educational Publications Contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association’s (PSBA). The district newsletter (Bear Tracks), annual report, and website each received the second honor, an award of honorable mention. PSBA received 45 entries statewide in the newsletter category with only 12 schools receiving honors. Elizabethtown Area was joined by Ephrata and Manheim Central as the only other schools in Lancaster County to be honored in this category.
