Articles in the June 13, 2013, issue of The Elizabethtown Advocate include:

Elizabethtown Area High School’s class of 2013 should remember those who helped them get where they are, the valedictorian told her classmates at the school’s graduation ceremony. “Don’t forget the people who have made you who you are today,” valedectorian Alison Levosky said in her speech on Thursday, June 6.

Most of the land in Elizabethtown Borough where homes can be built is already developed, but there is plenty of room to grow in neighboring townships. That means there must be a way for the new township residents to get to the services they need, including shopping at grocery and other stores that are outside the borough limits. One cheap way to accommodate that traffic is to route it through existing borough streets, turning neighborhood streets into through routes by eliminating parking to create another lane for traffic. But some Borough Council members said they don’t like that idea because they said it will diminish long-established neighborhoods in the borough.

Amish families who have moved into West Donegal Township have created an increase in horse-and-buggy traffic on township roads, leading a resident to request warning signs to be posted alerting motorists to watch out for buggies. Following a discussion about problems with horse manure on roads, Township Manager Gene Oldham said it would be a good idea for Wayne Miller, the township’s zoning and codes enforcement officer, to talk to his colleagues in parts of the county with larger Amish populations to find out how things are done there before West Donegal takes any action.

Three Elizabethtown Area High School seniors recently received Kaleidoscope Awards from Lynden Gallery in Elizabethtown for their creative work. Courtney Bair was awarded the Ned O. Wert Kaleidoscope Award for the Visual Arts; Alison Levosky was awarded the Betty G. Long Kaleidoscope Award for Music and Marissa Merkt was awarded the Louise B. Black Kaleidoscope Award for the Literary Arts. An award winners’ reception will be held at Lynden Gallery, 117 S. Market St. in Elizabethtown, on Friday, June 14, from 6 to 9 p.m.

Longtime Elizabethtown-area resident, author and three-time Democratic congressional candidate Lois Herr has donated the papers documenting her anti-discrimination case against AT&T and its aftermath to a Delaware institution where they are available to researchers. Herr has donated her papers to the Hagley Museum and Library, a nonprofit organization that collects, preserves and interprets the history of American enterprise.

For the last three years, fans of Elizabethtown Area High School sports have become used to hearing the name of Kirby Breault. Typically such a mention has come in conjunction with an eye-catching display of his noteworthy playmaking ability. But as the summer sets in and the school year ends, those fans are now facing the prospect of life after Breault. That’s because the young athlete, who graduated with the class of 2013, will be playing for a different team come the fall. That’s because Breault has been accepted to Juniata College, where he will compete as a member of the Juniata Eagles football team. The private college is in Huntingdon, a central Pennsylvania town about 80 miles north-northwest of Elizabethtown.

This year-end tradition brought learning to life as the students spent the day sharing information about their famous character of the past to their classmates, parents, teachers, and principals at the school.

The sixth graders have spent the year learning about various individuals from ancient world history. As part of the museum, the students selected a figure of their choice to portray. To prepare for the museum, the students were tasked with researching and writing an informational five-paragraph essay on their historical figure and then transforming it into a 2:00 – 2:30 minute monologue.

On the day of the event, they dressed like their character complete with props like shields, books, and staffs. In the crowded hallway, museum guests huddled around their favorite exhibits to hear the facts about the different people. The sixth graders remained stationary like a statue until museum visitors deposited a ticket into their bucket. Once a ticket was deposited, the “statue” came to life as the student acted out in monologue form a short skit about their figure.

The entire day was an interactive way for the students to learn about history. The program was coordinated by sixth grade teachers Adam Weber, Deb Houseal, and Dean May.

The students – all 311 of them – were cheered on by more than 2,000 guests including parents, family members, teachers, administrators, and school board members who supported them along the way.

Amidst much fanfare, valedictorian Alison Levosky and salutatorian Maura Fertich opened up the commencement program by leading the senior class into the packed auditorium where they were greeted by overwhelming applause and serenaded by the high school orchestra.

Michele Balliet, superintendent of schools, welcomed all in attendance and lauded the numerous accomplishments of the class.

“As you leave here this evening, having achieved this very important milestone – high school graduate – I want you to know how much you have meant to us here in the district,” said Balliet. “You are a special group of individuals who have inspired all of us and as our students, you deserved our very best.”

Terry Seiders, school board president, commended the graduates for their accomplishments and said the very thing that made their years at E-town a success was being engaged.

“You have engaged all of us here tonight over the years and allowed us to be a part of your success and because of that your legacy at Elizabethtown will always live on,” said Seiders. “Congratulations on your successes and accomplishments and always remember, after tonight; you’re a Bear for Life.”

Before the awarding of the valedictorian and salutatorian, high school principal Timothy Re offered up some final thoughts to the graduating seniors.

“This class will be remembered for their commitment to service to each other, the school, our community and to our nation,” said Re.

“In an era when it has become so easy for young people to focus on individual needs and wants, the class of 2013 chose to leave no one behind. We are graduating students that lead through service to others, service through mission trips, service through assisting their peers, and service through organizing and hosting an amazing THON! I thank each of you,” Re said.

Levosky, in a speech title – Remember. Don’t Forget – challenged her classmates to make a difference and change the word by not forgetting the people, experiences, and dreams that made the students who they are today.

“Don’t forget the people who have made you who you are today. If one of your teachers has helped to shape you into who you are, then tell them. Don’t take people like these for granted, because they are very likely some of the most incredible people you will ever meet.” said Levosky, adding that her classmates should dream big.

“Don’t forget about your dreams. We get so caught up in the individual steps. It’s the people with the biggest dreams that change the world in the biggest ways,” Levosky said.

Fertich added levity to the evening with a speech titled – Not a Typical Graduation Speech

“What truly makes us one class, the Class of 2013, are the disappointments we bond over, and the hard times we have to struggle through. Take that math exam you were pretty sure you failed. Remember how a topic that was mentioned one time in class ended up being a fifteen point question? Well, you’re not the only one who felt that way,” Fertich said.

“The point of all this was not to dredge up those painful memories we’d all love to forget. In fact, I’m sure some of these experiences, as terrible as they were at the time, have become some of your favorite funny stories. And it’s great that we’ve learned to laugh at ourselves! In fact, I’m encouraging you to take your wonderful senses of humor into the big, bad world,” said Fertich.

The final student speaker was Gavin Horning, who was selected as the senior speaker. Horning commended the Class of 2013 for its versatility, relating the incredible talents of the graduates to Blues music.

“I urge every student as we go into this world to never hold back, show why they are different and exploit their uniqueness in their own blues. Where would we be in music if artists were always afraid to be different? Where would we be if Martin Luther King was too much of a conformist to stand up and preach his words,” said Horning.

“So, Class of 2013, let’s play some blues music together,” Horning said.

Class officers for 2013 were Kara Martin, president; Lauren Hayden, vice president; Kaitlyn Kaufman, treasurer; and Alison Levosky, secretary.

Administrators, faculty, staff, and members of the board of school directors extend their congratulations and best wishes to the members of the Class of 2013.
