Opinion: More White Puzzle Pieces

Elizabethtown College recently made national news. The college’s democratic club promoted a program to spread awareness of the idea of white privilege. The story was picked up nationally and internationally.  Not surprisingly, it elicited quite a bit of response. Ever in the mix, The Elizabethtown Journal posted a submission by a reader and local columnist concerning the matter. Senior Center activities week of March 2

Area seniors are invited to participate in any of the following programs held at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center.  The Senior Center is located in the GEARS Community Center, Elizabethtown and is open Monday through Friday.  Call the center for more information about the activities or to make reservations at 367-7984.  The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center is a service of GEARS and the Lancaster County Office of Aging. Creative Arts in Aging- Everyone has a story to tell. Is yours funny? Sweet? Memorable? Did you ever come eye to eye with big game or meet a celebrity?  Julie and Barnaby Holmes, professional storytellers, will guide you through creating, organizing, and recording your special story. Diabetes Program to Offer Free Classes

Elizabethtown, PA  – Quality Insights’ Everyone with Diabetes Counts (EDC) program is partnering with Elizabethtown Area Senior Center to provide free diabetes education in Elizabethtown and surrounding areas. The EDC program is a national initiative of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). It is administered by Quality Insights in Pennsylvania as well as Delaware, Louisiana, New Jersey and West Virginia.  The program offers free classes that are open to people with diabetes, their family members and caregivers. EAHS students win regional STEM competition

February 22, 2017- A team of students from Elizabethtown Area High School recently won first place in the PA Governor’s STEM Competition. The gold-medal winning team was comprised of seniors Madison Ebersole, Solomon Heisey, Simon Munyan, Aparna Paul, and Kaitlyn Welch. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and math. My Journey into Darkness

I rejected it.  It was partly due to its source.  It was partly due to dubious facts and hyperbole.  It all started about 25 years ago when two related movements began to emerge.  Both originated from the right and became a convenient multipurpose narrative.  One movement was the fight against political correctness, a right epithet employed to describe the language and actions supporting minority interests.  The other was a movement to purge education of its perceived liberal bias, including the sensitivities to minority interests.  That was 25 years ago and, for the reasons mentioned above, impressed me as a contrived[Read more...]

EAMS Announces Second Marking Period Honor Roll

February 13, 2017- Dr. Nate Frank, principal of Elizabethtown Area Middle School, and Michael Pericci, assistant principal of Elizabethtown Area Middle School, announced the honor roll for the second marking period of the 2016-2017 school year. For students to achieve honor roll they are required to attain a 92% average overall with no grade lower than 83% in any subject area. A total of 226 students made the honor roll this marking period, which equates to roughly 37% of the student body in grades 7-8 having a GPA at or above 92%. Five EAHS Students Take Part In District Orchestra Festival

  February 13, 2017- Elizabethtown Area High School orchestra students Samuel Becker, Sean Brown, Mayelin Ebersole, Solomon Heisey, and Ethan Schneider recently joined over 100 other talented local student-musicians to form the 2017 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 7 Orchestra ensemble.  Selection to the orchestra was highly competitive involving talented student musicians from schools located in central Pennsylvania (Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties).  After rehearsing intensely for a day and a half at the PMEA Orchestra Festival, the prestigious group performed a culminating concert at Central York High School under the direction of Dr. Johannes[Read more...]
