The Myth of Human Capital

We offer a bit of poetry to illustrate a point.  American public policy assumes that a person’s lot in life is based on merit and human capital.  That perspective must also assume near perfect freedom of movement throughout the class and opportunity structure.  This is the American promise that merit will offer its deserved rewards. This American ideology has taken its place in both domestic policy and foreign policy. In the former, we have sought solutions to poverty and inequality through offering (at least promising) capital, human capital, to the downtrodden.  Human capital in this scenario is synonymous with education. [Read more...]

  2017 Lady Bear Football Classic             The annual Elizabethtown Lady Bear Football Classic is scheduled to take place on Friday, November 10 at the Elizabethtown High School Jane Hoover Field. At 6 pm a contest between the Sophomore and Freshman classes will kick the night off. EAHS October students of the month named

October 18, 2017- Elizabethtown Area High School seniors Kayla Grudi and Logan Hoover were named the Elizabethtown Rotary Club’s students of month for September. Grudi and Hoover were honored for their high academic achievement and extensive involvement in school, and community service activities. Grudi is the daughter of Walter and Kelly Grudi of Elizabethtown. She is a member of the prestigious National Honor Society. Grudi has held leadership roles in several school programs including co-president for the Class of 2018 and secretary for the Key Club.   She’s also involved with the school’s theater program having served as a student choreographer[Read more...]

  8th Annual Fall Festival             GEARS will be holding its 8th Annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 28th from 10 am to 2 pm at the Elizabethtown Fair Grounds.  The event is sponsored by J.T. Herres Dental Solutions and Albright & Thiry Orthodontic, and the Elizabethtown Rotary Club. BEARS Youth Basketball Sign-up              GEARS will be accepting registration for girls and boys in grades 1-9 for the BEARS Youth Basketball Program.  Players will participate in practices and games from late-November through the end of January.  Participation levels are grades 1 & 2 (instructional), grades 3 & 4, grades 5 & 6 and grades 7-9. Draft day for boys in grades 3-4 is Monday, November 6 from 6-7 pm. Draft day for boys in grades 5-6 is Monday, November 6 from 7:15-8:15 pm. Financial Aid Night Scheduled for Thursday, October 12

October 5, 2017- Elizabethtown Area High School’s Counseling Department will hold its annual Financial Aid Night on Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium. Parents of current juniors and seniors are encouraged to attend to learn about the financial aid process of college and other post-secondary education institutions. Kendra Feigert, director of financial aid for Lebanon Valley College, will present the information and answer questions regarding how to apply for financial aid, how financial aid eligibility is determined, types of financial aid, and what is a financial aid package.
